Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Bihar on Wednesday, June 19, to officially open the new Nalanda University campus. This campus is situated near the ruins of the historic university in Rajgir. The new campus is named after the ancient university, which was a global center for scholars approximately 1,600 years ago.
Calling the occasion "historic," the university's interim vice-chancellor, Professor Abhay Kumar Singh, told The Hindu, "We view the Prime Minister's visit as a very prestigious and auspicious event. The Prime Minister has made it even more special by bringing diplomats from East Asia Summit countries. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will also be attending. This celebratory spirit will provide a significant boost to Nalanda."
PM Narendra Modi's Nalanda visit
Modi is scheduled to visit ancient Nalanda, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2016, at around 9:45 AM. He will inaugurate the campuses at approximately 10:30 AM and deliver a speech, as stated by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).
Abhay Kumar Singh mentioned that Modi's visit would boost the global recognition of the university, which currently has students from 26 different countries.
Bihar's governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and chief minister Nitish Kumar will accompany the Prime Minister.
The university relocated to its new campus in 2020. This campus blends traditional and modern architectural styles. Spanning 455 acres, it features a Net Zero section with 100 acres of water bodies.
