The Delhi government gave Rs 100 crore to 12 colleges that it supports, and which are part of Delhi University (DU). This money is for the second part of the year's funding, as approved by Education Minister Atishi.
For the next budget year (2024-25), the Delhi government plans to allocate about Rs 400 crore for these colleges.
Last April, the government had already given Rs 100 crore for the first part of the year.
Earlier this year, the Delhi government had said it would only provide more money if these colleges left DU and joined a Delhi state university. However, DU’s Vice Chancellor wanted these colleges to stay with DU and keep getting funding from the Delhi government.
There have been concerns about financial problems in these colleges. A special audit in 2020 found serious issues with how money was being used. Atishi said there should be an inquiry into these problems and action taken against the colleges for illegal hiring and misused funds.
Despite these issues, Atishi mentioned that the Delhi government wants to ensure teachers and students don’t suffer because of these problems. So, Rs 100 crore has been released to support the colleges and address the financial issues affecting teachers' benefits.
