A day after a terrible flood in a Delhi IAS coaching centre killed three students, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has closed 13 coaching centres in the Old Rajinder Nagar area and aiming for more coaching based hubs like Mukherjee Nagar. These centres were found breaking rules by using their basements for commercial purposes.
The MCD team checked several centres on Sunday and shut down those using basements for business. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi said the MCD will keep closing centres breaking the rules, and this effort might expand to all of Delhi if needed.
The centres shut down for misusing their basements include:
- IAS Gurukul
- Chahal Academy
- Plutus Academy
- Sai Trading
- IAS Setu
- Topper’s Academy
- Dainik Samwad
- Civil’s Daily IAS
- Career Power
- 99 Notes
- Vidya Guru
- Guidance IAS
- Eassy for IAS
Oberoi has ordered the MCD Commissioner to take strong action against all coaching centres violating rules. She also promised an investigation into whether any MCD officials are to blame for the incident at Rau's IAS Study Circle, where the students died. If officials are found guilty, they will face strict punishment.
The MCD has been criticized for not properly enforcing building rules. After a fire at another coaching centre last year, a survey of rule-breaking centres started but was stopped midway. The Delhi High Court had ordered MCD and the Delhi Development Authority to shut down coaching centres violating fire safety rules.
The three students, two girls and one boy, died when a basement library at Rau's IAS Study Circle flooded during heavy rain. The investigation revealed poor drainage and that the centre did not have permission to use the basement as a library.
