The Delhi government has announced a new 21-point Winter Action Plan to combat air pollution in the city. This plan will use drones to monitor pollution in real time and deploy special task forces to enforce pollution control measures. It includes emergency steps like creating artificial rain and a vehicle rationing scheme if pollution levels rise significantly.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai introduced the plan, emphasizing the need for public involvement with the theme "Mil Kar Chalein, Pradushan Se Ladein," which means "Let’s Walk together, fight pollution." For the first time, drones will monitor 13 areas in Delhi known for high pollution levels, allowing for immediate action against pollution sources.
The plan will also launch an anti-dust campaign starting October 7 to tackle dust from construction sites and roads. The government plans to inspect construction sites and use road cleaning machines to reduce dust pollution.
Emergency measures such as encouraging work-from-home arrangements and the possibility of an odd-even vehicle rationing scheme will be implemented if pollution spikes. The government is also focused on reducing pollution from waste burning, industrial emissions, and vehicle exhaust, with various teams assigned to monitor these sources.
Additionally, there will be strict enforcement of a firecracker ban, which will be in effect again this year. Experts say that while the plan includes strong measures, its success depends on effective enforcement. The opposition has criticized the government for making announcements without taking substantial actions to address pollution, especially concerning stubble burning in neighboring Punjab.
