Instagram is working on a new feature to make temporary messages safer by blocking screenshots. This change will apply to messages sent in "Vanish Mode" and images or videos set to "View Once."
Vanish Mode was introduced in 2020 and is similar to Snapchat’s self-destructing messages. In this mode, messages disappear as soon as the recipient leaves the chat. "View Once" allows users to send photos or videos that can only be viewed once before disappearing, although users can choose to allow replays.
Currently, Instagram notifies users if someone takes a screenshot of their temporary messages or media. However, Instagram is now looking to block screenshots entirely in these modes. This is a step towards improving privacy, especially for younger users who may face risks like digital bullying or unwanted sharing of intimate content.
Even though blocking screenshots is a good move, it’s not a foolproof solution. Users might still capture the content with another device. The best advice remains to avoid sharing anything online that you wouldn’t want to be seen by the public.
Both iOS and Android devices can already block screenshots in certain app areas. Instagram has not yet provided official details about this update, but it aims to offer more protection for users.
