Netflix has rejected claims of plagiarism made by director Soham P Shah. Shah has filed a lawsuit in New York, saying that the popular Korean show "Squid Game" copies his 2009 Hindi film "Luck."
According to a report from TMZ, Shah argues that the story of "Squid Game" is very similar to that of "Luck," which stars Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan, and Sanjay Dutt. He believes that the main plot, characters, themes, and events in both works are too alike to be mere coincidence.
In response, Netflix stated, "This claim has no merit. Squid Game was created by and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk, and we intend to defend this matter vigorously."
Shah also claims that Hwang Dong Hyuk, the writer of "Squid Game," has previously stated that he wrote his version of the story in 2009, the same year "Luck" was released globally. Shah insists he wrote the original story around 2006, with "Luck" hitting theaters in 2009.
"Luck" tells the story of desperate people who are drawn into dangerous games for a chance to win money, where losing means death. "Squid Game," a Korean survival drama, features 456 participants in a deadly competition based on traditional children's games.
Shah filed the lawsuit as the second season of "Squid Game" is set to be released on Netflix on December 26.
