Recently, Delhi has experienced unusual rainfall patterns. Some areas in Delhi received heavy rain, while others remained dry. On Friday morning, parts of South, Central, and North Delhi saw a lot of rain. This caused severe water logging and traffic jams, especially on the Ring Road in South Delhi.
Rainfall in Nearby Areas
Nearby areas in the National Capital Region (NCR), like Ghaziabad and Noida, also experienced heavy rain.
Why Is the Rainfall Unusual?
Many people were surprised by the sudden rainfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this unusual weather is due to a "localized rain" pattern. This happens because of unique weather conditions around Delhi.
Two Weather Systems Causing the Rain
Two different weather systems are affecting Delhi's weather right now:
- Monsoon System: This system usually brings widespread rain over large areas. It is a tropical system, meaning it covers broad regions and brings a lot of rain.
- Westerly System: This system comes from a different direction and adds extra moisture to the air. It is an extra-tropical system, which means it usually affects smaller areas differently.
When these two systems meet in a small area, they cause heavy rain in specific parts of the city.
How the Systems Are Interacting
IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy explained that during the monsoon season, rain usually covers large areas. But right now, neither system is very strong. Rain happens only when both systems meet in a small area.
Different Effects of the Rain
Because of this unusual interaction, some areas in Delhi experience heavy rain and water logging, while others stay dry. This is why the rain pattern seems random and uneven across the city.
Impact on People
For people living in Delhi, the rain has brought mixed experiences. Some people enjoyed the cooler weather, while others faced problems like waterlogged streets and more traffic jams.
