Vikas Divyakirti, head of Drishti IAS, is responding to criticism after the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) shut down several coaching centers, including his, for not following safety rules. This follows a tragic incident where three students drowned due to waterlogging in a basement library at another coaching center.
Divyakirti expressed his sorrow for the victims and their families and acknowledged the students' anger. He suggested that this anger should be directed towards creating clearer safety guidelines for coaching centers and offered Drishti IAS's help in this process.
He explained that safety issues are complex due to unclear and conflicting rules from different authorities, including the Delhi Fire Department and the Delhi Development Authority. He hopes that the investigation into the tragedy will address these issues.
Divyakirti assured that Drishti IAS takes student safety very seriously, with a dedicated Fire and Safety Officer who regularly checks the centers. He supported the MCD's actions and suggested that if the government sets up designated areas for coaching centers with prepared facilities, it would solve safety and fee issues. Drishti IAS plans to provide a detailed analysis on these topics soon.
