The Delhi Metro is planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) in its Phase-4 project to manage crowds and maintain trains, according to officials.
In an interview with PTI, DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar said the metro has always kept up with new technology.
"The technology changes quickly, like our driverless metro. With driverless trains, you don't need a driver. You just press a button, and the train moves," Kumar said.
He explained that if there's a sudden increase in passengers, a driverless train can be quickly added. With regular trains, you need to find a driver first.
He also said that when there are fewer passengers, the metro can change the number of train cars. For example, a six-car train can be split into two three-car trains.
Other future plans include monitoring with CCTV cameras and facial recognition for crowd control.
DMRC's Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal mentioned that the metro is considering running trains with different numbers of cars depending on the traffic in Phase-4.
"This will help adjust capacities based on need. All these trains will be compatible with driverless operations like the Magenta and Pink lines. A total of 312 coaches are being bought for Phase-4," Dayal said.
Talking about revenue, the MD said the metro lost money during Covid for two years but now is making an operational profit.
