Electricity bills in Delhi went up from May 1 because power companies raised their rates. This affects many homes and businesses, and people are now getting higher bills in July.
The increase applies to areas served by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL).
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited did not increase its rates, but BRPL and BYPL did.
BYPL, which serves parts of East and Central Delhi, increased rates by 6.15%.
BRPL, which serves South and West Delhi, increased rates by 8.75%.
The rate increase is due to the Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC). This cost helps power companies pay for buying electricity from generators. These extra costs are added to consumer bills.
From May to July 2024, the total PPAC for Delhi’s power companies is:
- NDMC: 38.75%
- TPDDL: 37.88%
- BYPL: 37.75%
- BRPL: 35.83%
This includes old and new PPAC. NDMC and TPDDL each added 8.75%, BYPL added 6.15%, and BRPL added 8.75%.
This increase will last for three months from May 1. After this, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) will review and decide based on requests from power companies.
People in the affected areas now have higher electricity bills. This is hard for many, especially in the summer when electricity use goes up.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited did not raise its rates, so customers in its areas will not see any change in their bills.
The rate hike by BRPL and BYPL means higher bills for many in Delhi. Future decisions by DERC will affect long-term electricity costs in the city.
