In the year 2023-24, many students in Delhi government schools faced difficulties in passing their exams. About 100,000 Class 9 students did not pass, which is about 15% more than last year. Additionally, 46,622 Class 8 students and 51,914 Class 11 students also did not pass. These details were provided by the Delhi Directorate of Education in response to a request for information.
The 'no-detention' policy, which allowed students up to Class VIII to move to the next grade without exams, ended recently. Now, from the academic year 2023-24, students in Classes V and VIII may be held back if they don't score at least 33% in each subject and 25% in mid-term and annual exams.
Under the new promotion policy in Delhi schools, students in Classes 5-8 who fail their annual exams can take re-exams within two months to try and improve their grades. They need to score at least 25% in each subject to pass. If they don't pass these re-exams, they will need to repeat the same class in the next session.
