The Delhi government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, is working on a new bus system called the "Mohalla Bus" to improve how people get around the city. They’re using advanced technology and the expertise of IIT-Delhi to plan the best bus routes.
To make this work, they’ve set up a team of 32 Assistant Traffic Inspectors (ATIs). These ATIs are divided into four groups and will visit different areas to see where the buses should go and how they will operate. They’ll also get feedback from people living in those areas.
Delhi's Transport Minister, Kailash Gahlot, believes that using AI and big data will significantly improve the city’s transport system. The ATIs will help finalize the bus routes based on their findings.
This is how they’re figuring out the bus routes:
- Supply and Demand Model: IIT-Delhi will create a model to find out where there are lots of people needing buses but not enough bus services. They’ll use travel time data from various sources to figure this out.
- Travel Demand Model: This model will gather travel data from apps and services to see where people are traveling and identify busy areas.
- Route Design: Based on the data, IIT-Delhi will design the best routes for the Mohalla buses. They’ll use AI to make sure these routes are efficient and serve many people well.
- Monitoring: After designing the routes, IIT-Delhi will help monitor them to make sure they work well in real-time.
- Community Input: Besides using technology, they’re also getting feedback from local leaders, residents, and their own team to make sure the routes meet everyone’s needs.
