The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the tragic deaths of three civil services aspirants who drowned at a coaching centre in Delhi. The victims were Shreya Yadav, 25, from Uttar Pradesh; Tanya Soni, 25, from Telangana; and Nevin Delvin, 24, from Kerala. They drowned when heavy rains on July 27 caused water to flood the basement of Rau's IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar.
The Delhi High Court transferred the case from the Delhi Police to the CBI. The court was critical of the police and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for their handling of the situation. The judges were puzzled as to why the students could not escape the basement. They noted that it would take several minutes for water to fill a basement, so it seemed unlikely that the students were trapped immediately. They questioned whether the doors were blocked or if the staircases were too narrow.
Additionally, the court asked the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to appoint a senior officer to supervise the CBI’s investigation into the case. The aim is to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry into how the deaths occurred.
