Tata Electronics' new iPhone manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is set to start production in November. This will be Apple’s fourth assembly plant in India and Tata's second for making iPhones. The Hosur plant covers 250 acres and is expected to employ 50,000 people, mostly women. This makes it the second-largest facility for iPhones in Tamil Nadu, after Foxconn’s plant.
The plant’s preparations are nearly complete, and its component factory has already produced parts used in iPhones sold in China. The facility will have around 20 assembly lines and aims to be fully operational in 12 to 18 months.
This new plant is part of Apple's strategy to increase its manufacturing in India. It will help Apple reduce its reliance on China and strengthen its supply chain in India. Apple wants to produce over 50 million iPhones a year in India within the next few years and possibly many more beyond that.
Tata has also been expanding its partnership with Apple, not just in manufacturing but also by opening 100 new retail stores dedicated to Apple products. Apple has also started opening its own stores in India and plans to open more soon.
