WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to create unique usernames for their profiles. Currently, WhatsApp connects people using phone numbers, but this upcoming change will let you use a username instead. This new feature is expected to simplify how users connect with others, as you won't need to share your phone number to chat.
With this feature, users will be able to choose a unique username that isn’t already in use. Unlike other platforms where usernames might have numbers or tags to distinguish them, WhatsApp usernames will be completely unique. This means that each username will be distinct, avoiding any confusion or overlap with others.
Even though you can set a username, people who already have your phone number will still be able to contact you. The username feature adds a layer of privacy, allowing users to control who can initiate conversations. If someone knows either your username or phone number, they can still reach out to you.
Currently, this feature is still in development and will first be available on WhatsApp Web. The exact release date is not yet known, as WhatsApp is still testing and refining the feature to ensure it meets their standards.
