OpenAI has introduced a new AI model called OpenAI o1, which used to be known as Project Strawberry. This model was fully revealed on September 12 and is designed to think before responding. This helps it solve more difficult problems, especially in areas like science, coding, and math.
Unlike older models, OpenAI o1 spends more time thinking about the problem before answering, making it smarter in some situations. It can reason through complex tasks, similar to how a human would, and is good at solving problems that require multiple steps, like hard math or science questions. However, this thinking process makes it slower than other AI models.
Right now, OpenAI o1 doesn't have some features that older models, like GPT-4, have. For example, it can’t browse the web or handle pictures. It only works with text inputs for now. OpenAI is working to improve it and add more features in future updates.
OpenAI also released a smaller, cheaper version called o1-mini, which is faster and good for coding. It’s 80% cheaper than the main version but doesn’t have the same level of knowledge about the world.
The o1 models are available to users of ChatGPT Plus and Team plans. These users can pick between the o1-preview (the main version) or o1-mini, with message limits each week. OpenAI is planning to make o1-mini available for free users later.
However, the new OpenAI o1 model is more expensive than GPT-4. In India, for example, the o1 costs about Rs 1,260 per million input tokens, while GPT-4 costs Rs 420.
