In just 10 seconds, Neeraj Chopra made a huge impact at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He threw the javelin 89.43 meters on his very first try in the qualifiers. This was his best throw of the season and the second-best of his career. This impressive throw put him in the top spot and secured his place in the finals.
However, things didn’t go as planned in the final. Neeraj was surprised when Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan made an incredible throw of 92.97 meters in his second attempt, breaking the Olympic record. Nadeem’s throw was a new Olympic record, surpassing the previous record of 90.57 meters set by Andreas Thorkildsen of Norway in 2008.
Neeraj managed to throw 89.45 meters in his second attempt, which put him in second place. Although this was a season-best for him, it wasn’t enough to beat Nadeem. Nadeem threw another impressive 91.79 meters on his last attempt, almost breaking his own new record.
In the end, Neeraj had only one good throw in the final and lost to Nadeem. This was Neeraj’s first loss to Nadeem in their past eight years of competition. Despite this, Neeraj congratulated Nadeem and acknowledged his hard work.
Even though Neeraj didn’t win gold, he made history by securing India’s first silver medal at the Paris Olympics. He also became the fifth athlete to win two medals at the Games and the first to win back-to-back medals in track and field.
Neeraj shared that he was worried about his injury while competing and felt that he didn’t perform at his best. He promised to come back stronger and achieve even greater success in the future.
