Rahul Gandhi expressed this during the Parliament session, stating the opposition would back the Centre's Speaker candidate if their demand is met. Gandhi mentioned, “We told Rajnath Singh that we will support their Speaker candidate, but the Deputy Speaker post should go to the opposition.” He also highlighted PM Modi's call for constructive cooperation from the Opposition, while noting that Rajnath Singh had yet to follow up on discussions with Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav echoed the opposition's stance, saying, “The Opposition's demand is that the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha should come from the Opposition, and our party agrees with this view.”
Meanwhile, Kota MP Om Birla, who held the Speaker post in the previous House, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sources suggest Birla is likely to be the NDA’s candidate for the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. The opposition may not field its own candidate, potentially allowing the NDA nominee to be elected unopposed, with the possibility of securing the Deputy Speaker position for the opposition bloc.
