Early Life and Family
Jay Amitbhai Shah was born on 22 September 1988 in India. He is the son of Amit Shah, the Minister of Home Affairs of India, and Sonal Shah.
Education and Early Career
Jay Shah began his career in cricket administration as an executive board member of the Central Board of Cricket in Ahmedabad in 2009. In September 2013, he became the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), where he played a significant role in the construction of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)
Shah joined the BCCI's finance and marketing committees in 2015. In September 2019, he was elected Secretary of the BCCI, making him the youngest office bearer at the time. He was re-elected to this position in October 2022. Under his leadership, the BCCI secured a record-breaking media rights deal for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022, making the IPL the second most valued sporting league in the world.
Asian Cricket Council (ACC)
In January 2021, Jay Shah was appointed President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He was re-elected in January 2024. The ACC presidency rotates among full-members in Asia, but Sri Lanka Cricket proposed Shah's extension, which was accepted by other members.
International Cricket Council (ICC)
In December 2019, Shah was selected as the BCCI's representative for the ICC's Chief Executives' Committee (CEC). By April 2022, he had become an ICC Board Member Representative and was elected head of the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) committee in November 2022. Shah has been a key figure in securing cricket's participation in the 2028 Olympics and advocating for its inclusion in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. He will assume the role of Chair of the ICC on 1 December 2024.
Personal Life
Jay Shah married Rishita Patel, his college girlfriend, in February 2015. The wedding was attended by high-profile figures including Prime Minister NarendraModi.
Legal Matters
Shah filed a criminal defamation case and a civil lawsuit of ₹100 crore against The Wire in 2017 over allegations of his company's revenue increase linked to NarendraModi's rise as Prime Minister. The Gujarat High Court restored a gag order against The Wire, and the publication eventually withdrew its appeal.
