Early Life and Education
Ramachandra Reddy Gari Pratap Reddy, also known as Chalapati, was born in MatyamPaipalle village, located in the Tavanampally mandal of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to a simple family and pursued his education with dedication. Chalapati studied up to the postgraduate level, attending institutions in Madanapalle and Tirupati. His early aspirations led him to secure a position in the Sericulture Department.
Turning Point in Life
While working in Visakhapatnam, Chalapati encountered Maoist groups. This association drastically changed the course of his life. He left his professional career and became actively involved in the Maoist movement.
Over time, his commitment and strategic thinking helped him rise through the ranks, ultimately becoming a prominent leader. Chalapati held the significant position of Odisha Secretary within the Maoist organization.
Activities and Notoriety
Chalapati became a well-known figure within the Maoist movement, recognized for his ability to evade law enforcement. He gained notoriety after escaping a high-profile encounter in the Visakha Agency area.
His influence within the Maoist ranks and his ability to organize operations made him a target for security forces. The government placed a reward of ₹1 crore on his capture, underlining the threat he posed to law and order.
Impact on Family and Village
Chalapati’s involvement in the Maoist movement created tensions within his family. His relatives distanced themselves from him due to the dangers associated with his activities.
His elder brother, Chandrasekhar Reddy, chose to continue working in the Sericulture Department in Madanapalle, which is now part of Annamayya district. Chalapati’s family eventually left their ancestral home in MatyamPaipalle to escape the growing strain caused by his actions.
Death and Legacy
Chalapati was killed during an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh. His death has created a significant stir in his native village and is seen as a major setback to the Maoist movement in the agency areas.
While the government and security forces view his death as a success in their efforts to curb extremist activities, it also highlights the persistent challenges posed by Maoist factions in the region.
