Manu Bhaker, India's top pistol shooter, won two bronze medals at the Paris Olympic Games. Unfortunately, she’s been facing some problems off the field. Some brands used her photos without permission to congratulate her, which is not allowed. Manu Bhaker’s team has sent legal notices to these brands. They believe that only brands officially connected to Manu have the right to use her images in ads.
Neerav Tomar, from the company managing Manu, said that about twenty brands not linked to Manu have posted congratulatory ads using her pictures. This is called “unauthorized moment marketing,” and these brands will face legal action.
Manu’s situation isn’t unique. Other Indian athletes from the Paris Games are facing similar issues with brands using their images without permission.
A spokesperson from Baseline Ventures, which manages other Indian athletes, warned that brands without sponsorship cannot use athletes' images in ads. If they do, they will face legal consequences.
Manu Bhaker made history by winning two individual medals in the same Olympics, something no other post-independent Indian athlete has done before. She’s also competing in another event and could win more medals.
