Sanjay Roy, who has been arrested for the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has had multiple failed marriages. He was a civic volunteer for the police, which gave him access to many parts of the hospital. Civic volunteers help with tasks like traffic management and disaster response and earn about Rs 12,000 a month.
Roy began working with the Kolkata Police’s disaster management team in 2019. Later, he transferred to the police welfare cell and then to the hospital where he had access to all departments. He was part of a scheme that charged patients' families for getting hospital admission and even for finding beds at nearby nursing homes if the hospital was full.
Despite not being a regular police officer, Roy often pretended to be one. He wore clothes and used a bike with police markings, which led many to believe he was a real cop. He stayed at police barracks using his supposed connections.
Roy admitted to the crime during questioning and showed no remorse, even saying, "Hang me if you want." The woman’s body was found in the seminar hall of the hospital, showing signs of sexual abuse and murder. The preliminary autopsy report confirmed she was sexually assaulted before being killed. Roy was arrested after his suspicious behavior and history of inappropriate conduct with women at the hospital came to light.
