Dennis Francis, President of the United Nations General Assembly, praised India's digital advancements, especially how smartphones have helped many people. He said that in the last five to six years, India has lifted 800 million people out of poverty by using smartphones.
In rural areas, people who once had no access to banks or payment systems can now pay bills and get money for their orders using just their smartphones. The widespread use of the internet in India has made this possible.
Francis noted that many other countries haven't experienced this level of digital progress, so he called for efforts to ensure everyone benefits from digital technology. In India, the government has pushed for digital banking and payments, especially after banning large banknotes in 2016. The JAM initiative, which stands for Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile, has helped many people open bank accounts and access government schemes.
