The Haryana government went to the Supreme Court to appeal against a decision by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The High Court had ordered Haryana to open the Shambhu border within a week. Haryana argued that it had warned about possible problems with law and order if the border opened. The state said it's responsible for handling safety and peace issues, as per the law.
Haryana also mentioned that despite the inconvenience caused by the closed border, there were still many vehicles and protesters camping there. The Supreme Court agreed to hear Haryana's appeal on July 22.
The Shambhu border has been closed since February 13 due to protests by farmer unions from Punjab heading towards Delhi for various demands, like guaranteed prices for crops. Haryana blocked the highway to prevent them from reaching Delhi.
