Kerala has reported another case of amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare brain infection caused by a tiny amoeba found in dirty water. This makes a total of four cases in the state.
According to PTI news agency, the patient is a 14-year-old boy from Payyoli in Kozhikode district, north Kerala. He is being treated at a private hospital.
The boy was admitted to the hospital on July 1, and his condition is getting better, said one of the doctors treating him.
The doctor also said that the infection was identified quickly on Saturday, and treatment, including medicines from abroad, was given right away.
On July 3, another 14-year-old boy infected with the amoeba died in Kerala.
Before that, two other children, a five-year-old girl from Malappuram and a 13-year-old girl from Kannur, died from the same infection on May 21 and June 25, respectively.
Recently, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a meeting. They suggested not bathing in dirty water to prevent more infections.
They also suggested proper chlorination of swimming pools and advised children to be careful when entering waterbodies, as they are mostly affected by this disease.
The Chief Minister said that everyone should take care to keep waterbodies clean.
