The new Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, is facing delays in its construction. Originally planned to start operating by the end of 2024, it's now expected to begin commercial flights by late April 2025. The delays are mainly due to problems getting certain materials and equipment needed for construction, caused by global supply chain issues related to international conflicts.
The airport project, managed by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, is crucial for the Uttar Pradesh government. Once fully completed in several phases, it will handle up to 70 million passengers annually. The first phase, to be completed first, includes one runway and terminal capable of handling 12 million passengers per year.
The airport aims to serve the growing air travel needs of the Delhi-NCR region and Western Uttar Pradesh. It will function as a second major airport alongside Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is expected to reach its capacity soon due to increasing air traffic.
Overall, despite setbacks, progress continues with key construction milestones such as the runway, terminal, and control tower. Once operational, the Noida International Airport is poised to support the region's air transportation demands effectively.
