India to Host DeepSeek AI Chatbot Locally
India is about to host an advanced AI chatbot called DeepSeek on Indian servers. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this announcement during a press conference for the India AI Mission. He shared that hosting DeepSeek locally in India would address concerns over privacy when using AI tools like ChatGPT. Vaishnaw emphasized that this move would allow for better control over data used in AI models.
Collaboration Through India's Common Compute Facility
Vaishnaw also mentioned that DeepSeek would be made available on India’s new common computing facility. This facility will help startups and developers work together, contributing to the development and growth of DeepSeek. He highlighted that this would open opportunities for innovation, as many different ideas could be shared and improved.
India’s Advantage in AI Development
The Minister explained that the real value of artificial intelligence comes from the efficiency of algorithms and the quality of data used to train them. He pointed out that India has a strong advantage in this area. With advanced computing resources and high-quality data, India can outshine other countries in the development of AI technologies.
Access to Innovation for Startups
The common computing facility is designed to be accessible to many people, making it easier for startups to develop new ideas and improve AI systems. Vaishnaw expressed confidence that this collaboration would help in building better and more efficient AI models.
DeepSeek: The Popular AI Chatbot
DeepSeek is an open-source AI chatbot that has already become very popular. It was launched in December 2023 by Liang Wenfeng and quickly became the most downloaded free app on the Apple App Store in the United States. DeepSeek is considered a competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4 and is known for its strong performance in tasks like math, coding, and language processing.
Low-Cost Development of DeepSeek
Despite its capabilities, DeepSeek has been trained at a much lower cost than GPT-4. While it cost $6 million to train DeepSeek, GPT-4’s training cost was over $100 million. The lower cost of DeepSeek’s development is due to the founder’s access to Nvidia A100 chips, which have been banned from export to China since September 2022.
India’s Growing Role in Global AI Development
With these exciting developments, India is positioning itself to become a major player in the global AI space, offering both innovation and security in the world of artificial intelligence.
