Heavy rains in Kerala, India, have caused massive landslides that have killed at least 93 people, with many more feared trapped. The landslides happened in Wayanad district early on Tuesday and have destroyed homes and washed away roads. Rescue operations are underway but are difficult due to ongoing heavy rains and a collapsed bridge.
The disaster is the worst since 2018, when floods killed over 400 people. Over 200 army personnel are helping with search and rescue, and local hospitals are treating around 129 injured people. About 250 people have been rescued and taken to safety.
Landslides have affected areas like Mundakkai, Attamala, Chooralmala, and Kunhome, causing muddy water to flood streets and damage homes. The collapse of a bridge has made it hard for rescuers to reach some areas.
Local and national disaster teams are working to help, but strong river currents and heavy rains are complicating efforts. Schools and colleges in many districts are closed due to the weather. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised federal support and compensation for victims' families.
