The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on July 1 that 97.87% of ₹2,000 banknotes have been withdrawn as of June 28.

In May 2023, the RBI decided to withdraw the ₹2,000 currency note. At that time, ₹3.56 lakh crore worth of these notes were in circulation across the country.

As of June 2024, ₹7,581 crore worth of ₹2,000 notes are still in circulation, according to the latest RBI data. This remaining amount has decreased by 2.29% compared to the previous month, when it was ₹7,755 crore. These notes are still legal tender.

Since the withdrawal announcement, people have been able to exchange ₹2,000 banknotes at 19 RBI Issue Offices. Starting October 2023, individuals and entities could deposit these notes into their bank accounts. They could also send them through India Post from any post office to an RBI Issue Office for deposit.

Until October 7, 2023, all bank branches in the country also accepted ₹2,000 notes for deposit or exchange.
