What is Teej Festival?
Teej is a special festival celebrated in India and Nepal. It is mostly for women and is linked to the monsoon season. Women dress in beautiful red clothes, wear jewelry, and sing and dance with joy. They pray to the goddess Parvati for a happy and long married life.
Why Do People Celebrate?
It celebrates the marriage of Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. According to the story, this is the day when Lord Shiva accepted Maa Parvati as his wife. The goddess spent 107 lives in prayer and hard work. During her 108th life, Devi Parvati finally won Lord Shiva's love and became known as Teej Maata. The festival also celebrates the rainy season, which brings new life and happiness.
Types of Teej
There are three main types of Teej:
- Hariyali Teej - Celebrated in July or August, women enjoy swings, sing songs, and celebrate nature.
- Kajari Teej - Happens in August, focusing on songs and prayers for a good harvest and the well-being of families.
- Hartalika Teej - Celebrated in August or September, women fast and pray for the happiness and health of their husbands.
