Kamala Harris, the first Indian-American and African-American woman Vice-President of the U.S., might become the Democratic Party’s candidate for President in 2024.

U.S. President Joe Biden decided not to run for re-election on July 21, making way for Kamala Harris to be the Democratic choice. Biden supports her and has asked Democrats to unite and support her in the next election.

Kamala Harris’s mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was from Tamil Nadu, India. She raised Kamala and her sister as a single mother. Kamala Harris has strong ties to India through her family, who were involved in various fields like social work and academia.

Kamala Harris visited Chennai after her mother’s death to follow Hindu traditions and has spoken fondly about her mother’s love for Indian food like idli. Her election win in 2020 was celebrated in her ancestral village in Tamil Nadu with great joy.
